The Third Party Issue- (The Thing everyone tip toes around...)

My great-grandfather was one of the first board certified surgeons in the state of Indiana. He worked feverishly to invest time and energy into various hospitals in Indiana, and well as push for the importance of board certification to ensure that good doctors can be picked out among the rest. Some of my favorite stories of my grandfather, Dr. Will C. Moore, are those that happened at the farm that I grew up on, White Oak Farms, in Muncie, Indiana. At the time, this was a farmer's community, and Dr. Moore was certainly one of the only physicians around a 25 mile period or so. He would see everyone, for everything. This honest man and friend of all practiced medicine in much simpler times. Upon the completion of his visits, house calls, surgeries, he would not ask for his patients insurance card. If he were alive, he would surely think that the action of "insurance" was a joke. He would present the patient with a bill. A reasonable bill for his services, with the promise that it be paid in due time. When people could not afford to pay for their treatment, Dr. Moore, or "Mimi" as he was called by his family, would accept chickens, hay, and other livestock in payment for his hard work.

If you go to eat at any restaurant in America, and are unable to pay your bill- do you call a third party for assistance- or do you humbly head to the back, throw on some rubber gloves, and do the dishes for the amount of hours that your dinner cost? You clean!

The 1960s threw a devastating curve-ball to the American people when Congress passed the employee based Health Care system, or in other words, the laws that require you to use the health insurance that your company offers. It is here that the third party jumps into the story-line and monotonously says "Hi, I'm the third party- I'm going to steal your soul and bankrupt your country." And that is exactly what the third party did- play on innate human desires and emotions to offset the idea of financial burdens and the responsibilities that come with that.

To prove my point, answer these questions aloud, or to yourself. (Disclaimer: If asking them to yourself, and voices start to respond in a vibrant capacity- I happily encourage you to see someone immediately.)

If you had a paper due tomorrow, and someone offered to do 80% of it, if you started the first 20%.... would you let them do it?

Don't lie to yourself... You would.

If you wanted to buy a car, and your wealthy grandfather said that as soon as you could save $10,000 to contribute, that he would offer up $45,000 to add to your money.... would you go ahead and sign the papers for your dream car?

I would personally submit your paperwork to the Catholic Church to nominate you for sainthood if you said no to this. Or hold your hand to the nearest mental health facility. (Disclaimer: In no way are those two options connected, per-say, however, for the record, I would most likely choose the former option, as it will mean I will pay less taxes than if I took you to a facility that I essentially paid for in order for you to attend through my ridiculous taxes. Don't worry, this will never end....)

If you wished to build a home, and a contractor said, "if you put up the foundation and the supporting beams, we will pay for the rest of the house... we will even throw in Kenmore Energy saving appliances, and a luxury homeowners sweet for you to enjoy, free of cost." Would you sign the contract, and break ground the next day?

In the event that you answered "No," to the three asked questions- Tibet is always in need of those who look stellar cloaked head to toe in bright orange sarongs. Easy on the curry- has the ability to ruin a bowel system pretty easily.

YES! OF COURSE YOU WOULD! YOU WOULD NOT BE A SELF-INTERESTED, PROFIT MAXIMIZING HUMAN IF YOU SAID NO TO ANY OF THOSE QUESTIONS. YOU ARE NOT A BAD PERSON FOR SAYING YES- YOU ARE A RATIONAL, LOGICAL, HUMAN BEING. AND TO THIS I SAY: "Welcome to the Republican Party, my friend." (www.gop.com Check it out!).

To sum it all up- a third party system allows us to receive goods and services that we can't afford. It also encourages excessive tests, excessive surgeries, excessive visits... which all equal... excessive costs that are unfortunately covered by all who pay into the "pot." The only line on your bill that you actually look and pay attention to is the bolded/highlighted words that say "YOU OWE." When the reality is, the actual cost was five times that amount. We have so sadly lost course on the medical system of my great-grandfathers years, and it is for this reason a change needs to incur... just not this one.

  1. Amen sister! That's the problem with our country and why we're heading down "Death Care Lane". People do not pay for their services and people abuse the welfare system. Love the blogs Kami! Good job!
